Editable grids is an out of box functionality introduced last year for Dynamics 365 CRM. This functionality has been discussed at length ever since the functionality release. There are a lot of advantages and use cases for this functionality. If you’re not familiar with this, I would recommend reading up on it. With all of the benefits, there are also few compromises to using editable grids that you will want to be aware of.
Next record functionality
Sales users who are in CRM like the ability to easily move through records and quickly update information. They also like editable grids for this very reason, not having to open a record to update data. Unfortunately, you can’t have both. When an entity has the custom grid functionality enabled, the arrows that go to the next record that appear when on a record form are greyed out. This forces organizations to choose between editable grid, or ability to easily go to the next record.
A previous blog on Dynamics CRM Pros has discussed this a little more in depth. I would recommend reading it here. While reviewing Microsoft documentation here on supported entities, and while attempting to implement editable sub-grid for opportunity products, I realized the editable grid is not available on the web version for Opportunity Product, Quote Product and Invoice Product entities. Those entities are however able to use this functionality on the tablet or phone applications. As these grids are already “editable” with out of box functionality, the limitation here is that the views for the sub-grids cannot be updated and use the new editable grid functionality.
Clients that require more functionality than available with the out of box grids for Opportunity Product, Quote Product and Invoice Product entities can use a third party solution, as mentioned in the previously linked blog on Dynamics CRM Pros. RSM has also created custom editable grids for clients that meet their specific needs.
