Microsoft’s Deadline – Migrating from Microsoft D365 Modern POS to Store Commerce by October 2023!

By - February 9, 2023

We are roughly halfway through Q1 2023, and as such the Dynamics 365 Commerce platform continues to evolve at a rapid pace. With evolution comes the need for change, this change is required to push the boundaries of what a platform can offer to its users.

In Q2 2022, Microsoft released its new next generation applications for Point-of-Sale called Store Commerce and its new Commerce SDK development framework. The Store Commerce applications have been redesigned from the ground up with key goals in mind, which include but are not limited to:

  • Simplifying management lifecycle for the POS applications
  • Performance improvement
  • Extension based framework, designed to keep customer and ISV extensions separate from Microsoft base code, simplifies the development, deployment, and update cycle for extensions.

Native Store Commerce applications for Windows, iOS and Android are available. Store Commerce for Web is also available on platforms supporting either Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome based browsers.  Learn more…

With the public release of the Store Commerce applications and the updated Commerce SDK development framework, the migration timer has started. In October 2023, Microsoft will be deprecating the Dynamics 365 Commerce legacy applications and development tools (learn more): Modern Point-of-Sale (MPOS), Retail hybrid applications for mobile platforms, and the legacy Retail Development SDK Framework. As such, users will need migrate end-user Point-of-Sale applications and custom development (including extensions provided by Independent Software Vendors (ISVs)) to the new store Commerce Application and Commerce development SDK Framework, respectively. Migrating will require that custom code be reviewed and refactored for the new extension-based framework, impacting in-house custom code and ISV solutions.

With the deadline only eight months away, it is crucial that at the start of the 2023 holiday season, companies will have to determine when they can complete the migration while weighing the pros and cons. Starting the migration process now provides the benefit of giving users a longer runway to complete the migration (code review, testing through deployment in production) prior to the busy holiday season. This would minimize the impact of such a massive change on forecasted holiday revenue. Customers who delay upgrading until closer to the deadline (or after it) run the risk of disrupting their business during heavy revenue generating period, experiencing a lack of support for fixing issues in a deprecated product, or finding themselves in a long cue of clients waiting for implementation partners who can help them migrate.
