Can self-driving cars boost productivity?

The age of self-driving cars is among us. While first we thought it was a fantasy and wouldn’t happen in our lifetime, it is here and it’s only going to grow in popularity. Personally, I enjoy driving, so I’ve had a hard time thinking of why I’d want a self-driving car. That was until I saw this image.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the average daily commute in the U.S. is around 50 minutes. While I typically listen to podcasts or talk radio during my commute, what if I could do something more productive? What if instead of “clocking-in” when I arrive at work, I could clock-in when I get into my vehicle. That’s an hour of time I could get back at the end of the day to spend with my family or pursue my passion of choice outside of work.

Well, that scenario is a reality for one of RSM’s NetSuite clients. While commuting to work in a self-driving Tesla, this person is approving quotes directly in NetSuite. While normally a task for when they get into the office or have a minute on their mobile device, now they can be more productive with their commute time. In my opinion, this brings mobility to the next level as we continue to be “connected” in all areas of our lives.

What if your service tech didn’t have to spend time at one location entering in their notes before they left for the next appointment and instead, they could do it on the way? How many more clients could you serve?

What about sales reps who could be on calls, texting, emailing or delivering quotes to clients in between sales visits?

What about the general productivity of your workforce because they’re already “in the zone” when they arrive at the office?

Technology will continue to enhance our ability to be more productive and allow businesses to serve clients better and make more money. I’m excited to see how the development of driverless vehicles helps people become more productive.
