Importance of a good project manager

Technology projects are constantly growing in complexity. With multi-level integrations between systems, infrastructure and business intelligence; talented minds and skill sets regularly need to interact at the same table to accomplish upgrades, new features or even resolve critical problems.

When these times present themselves; a capable Project Manager or an individual with strong Project Coordination skills can be the difference between a timely and efficient resolution or a long drawn out failed initiative.

Now, it’s not the technical skills or experience that lead you to be a good Project Manager. A good Project Manager has incredible detail organization, sense of urgency and great ability to pin point the tasks that lead the team to a productive return.

This person can effectively maintain a timeline and drive implementation or completion of tasks as if at that time, those tasks are the most important tasks in the world. The timely completion is the letter of the law and the Project Manager provides the necessary motivation, or locates the necessary skills to accommodate the timeline and effort.

When project problems are encountered, whether they be personnel or technology based problems; the Project Manager can apply a methodology to promote critical thinking within the project team and encourage resolution.

A Project Manager goes well beyond a “task list keeper” or someone who can update fields in a Gantt chart. The understanding and mentality that their role is what leads to project success or failure is the baseline and beginning of Project Manager success.
