RSMUS.comPay-as-you-go (PAYG) also known as pay-per-usage or pay-per-use is a payment method that charges users for procured rather than actual computing resources. It is similar to how we pay our utility bills; using the resources and paying only for what we use each billing cycle. One main advantage of this methodology is that there are no wasted resources, since you only pay for services procured as opposed to continuously running a certain infrastructure which you may or may not use.
With traditional on-premise enterprise solutions, users architect data storage to handle the maximum workload. But the cloud and the PAYG methodology allows you to be only responsible for what you store and use. Pay-as-you-go cloud computing system allows users to scale, modify and provision computing resources, including but not limited to software, storage and other dev platforms. How much you’ll be charged are based on used services, versus an entire infrastructure. Hence, paying only for the IT capacity you actually consume generates major savings. The common IT culture of traditionally investing in an infrastructure backend to accommodate maximum demand levels may be both understandable and a safe bet, however in the Cloud era it is becoming an expensive mistake.
