Hands-on Learning: Practicing Software Skills During Training

By - September 21, 2018

Over the past two years, I have worked to design and develop training courses for Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. Several important elements create successful software training experiences for learners. In this article, I will highlight the advantages of providing a “sandbox” or temporary software training environment throughout live and virtual training experiences.

Guided Experiences

Software training designed for new users strives to establish and continuously increase the user’s confidence in the software. Training courses that provided guided steps, knowledgeable instructors, and training environments provide new users with the tools, resources, and support to perform common software tasks in a guided, helpful setting prior to independently working with the software. This helps learners and instructors identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for additional support that will make the user proficient after the training concludes.

Learning Repetition

Training environments allow learners to adhere to the adage, “Practice makes perfect.” For example, a learner attempting to create a sales order for the first time in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations may be able to apply experiences from their first attempt to a second attempt at the same process. Encouraging and supporting repetition helps improve skill proficiency and increases learner confidence.

Risk Control

The RSM Technology Academy provides training environments that are completely separate from real data and live versions of the software. This risk-free training space provides learners with example data that they can use to understand and practice processes and tasks with no chance of making mistakes that affect their company’s real data.

The RSM Technology Academy strives to provide the best training experience possible using the tools that will enhance learner confidence and software proficiency.
