What’s Next for Microsoft Dynamics GP?

By - July 17, 2025

Key takeaways from RSM’s latest survey

With Microsoft ending mainstream support for Dynamics GP by December 31, 2029, and only two years of security updates after that, organizations relying on GP face a critical decision point. To help GP users understand where they stand—and what comes next—RSM surveyed organizations across North America.

Here are the key findings, risks, and recommendations for moving forward from our survey, “The state of the Microsoft Dynamics GP market“.

Deep roots: long-term GP users are the norm

Nearly half (47%) of survey respondents have been on Dynamics GP for over 20 years. Another 36% have used GP for 10 to 20 years. Industries like nonprofit and education, manufacturing, healthcare, and business services are especially reliant on this trusted platform.

But even trusted solutions have a shelf life.

The risks of staying on Dynamics GP

Once Microsoft ends support, organizations face mounting challenges:

– Security vulnerabilities: Without updates, GP will become a prime target for ransomware and data breaches.

– Compliance risks: Meeting standards like GDPR and CCPA will be harder without a supported system.

– Deteriorating functionality: Performance and software compatibility will decline.

– Dwindling support: Finding skilled GP support resources will become costly and difficult.

Slow movement toward alternatives

Despite these risks, only 10% of organizations plan to move off GP in the next year, with almost half admitting they’ll stay on ‘until it stops working.’

When asked about next solutions:

– 8% are considering Dynamics 365 Business Central

– 6% are looking at Sage Intacct

– A staggering 61% still don’t know their next move

This hesitancy could leave many organizations scrambling as the 2029 deadline approaches.

Payroll: an immediate priority

21% of respondents are still running payroll on GP, which is particularly risky post-support. RSM advises clients to transition payroll first, even if the full ERP migration is staged for later. Many organizations are shifting to solutions like UKG and Dayforce.  RSM can help with these migrations.

RSM’s guidance for GP users: don’t wait to plan

ERP migrations are complex and can take years. Waiting is not a strategy.
