Update Rollup 3 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 released: install or not to install?

By - August 5, 2014

With each new Update Rollup of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 being released, you have to think carefully if it is worth upgrading to the latest and greatest. Due to Microsoft naming convention lately with these Update Rollups, it can be confusing for Dynamics CRM consultants to identify which update I need or don’t need for their Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 solutions.

So, that brings us to what Update Rollups are currently available to download, which are the followings:

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Update Rollup 1: Ver. Number – 6.0.0001.0061 (KB Article)
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Update Rollup 2: Ver. Number – 06.00.0002.0051 (KB Article)
  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Update Rollup SP1: Ver. Number – 6.1.0000.0581 (KB Article)
  • (NEW) Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Update Rollup 3: Ver. Number – 06.00.0003.0106 (KB Article)

If you are starting a brand new Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 on-premise environment, I recommend installing the Dynamics CRM 2013 Update Rollup SP1, which is a cumulative update of fixes of RU1 & RU2. However, if you are already on RU SP1, you may want to wait on updating to RU3. Here’s why, taken directly from the KB article of RU3:

Important notes

“If Update Rollup 3 is applied, we recommend that you wait until Update Rollup 1 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is available before you upgrade to the Service Pack 1 release stream. This is because Update Rollup 3 may contain fixes that are not included in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 SP1.”

In a nutshell, there seems to be a separate RU1 specifically for those already with RU SP1 installed, hence it is best to wait for that update rollup if you are currently on SP1. On the other hand, if you already have RU2 (not SP1) installed in your Dynamics CRM 2013 environment, then proceeds to install RU3. Another important note is that RU3 does not have any update fixes for the Outlook client.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM Update Rollup 3 does not include an update for Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook”.

So before you rush to install the latest and greatest update for Dynamics CRM 2013, decide what kind of issues you currently have in your Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013, then read the Rollup Update KB article fixes and select the best upgrade path that will address those issues accordingly.

Lastly, RU SP1 cannot be rolled back once installed, but those other Rollup Updates can, so something to keep in mind when choosing your Rollup Update.
